The age of Torna Fort is to be anticipated and is quite tough for the historians. Many archeologists estimate its age must be in the 13th century and is built by Shaivites. It is known as the first fort which was captured by Shiva ji Maharaja when he was teenager. The geographic location of this fort is very important because it is located in the Western Ghats of India and highest point in the Pune district. History of Torna Fort:  

At the entrance gate of the Fort, there is a temple of Menghai Devi which is also known as Torna Ji temple. That is why; it got its name Torna Fort. In 1646, the fort was conquered by Shivaji Maharaj, at the age of 16 years. He also changed the name of the fort and started calling as Prachandagad which means massive fort. The fort remained under the control of Marathas till the 18th century. The first son of Shivaji, Sambhaji was assassinated and then it was controlled by Mughal at that time, the ruler of Delhi was Aurangzeb who renamed it as Fatulgaib. According to the treaty of Purandar which was signed in 1776, Maratha was given back to this fort.


Best Time To Visit Torna Fort:-

Exploring the surroundings of the fort begins from the month of October to March. In these months, one can experience the soothing natural beauty that can be a good treat to the eyes. Monsoon can be an ideal time too. The timings of the fort are around the clock, but it is advisable to visit from 5AM to 6 PM.  

How To Reach Torna Fort:-

Pune is the nearest city to Torna Fort which is located at a distance of 54 KM and located in the ranges of Sahyadri Mountains. Pune has the airport and train station as well, after de-boarding here; one can get private taxis, buses, or OLA and Uber to reach the fort.
